Chapter 5 - Near Miss

Gemma woke and stretched luxuriously. Then tensed. A languorous arm draped across her midriff and a whiff of morning breath assaulted her nose. Looking down she was relieved to see the pink cami top and shorts of her pjs firmly in place but she spent longer confirming that, yes, Max’s glorious golden body was, in fact, naked and entwined with hers.

Crikey! Gemma took in the suspiciously hairless chest as her eyes dropped lower. Interesting. Not a hair to be seen.

“Enjoying the view?” Grinning from ear to ear Max wiggled his hips in a lewd manner that Gemma found surprisingly unsexy.

Dropping the covers like they were made of molten lava, Gemma grabbed her phone. What time was it?

Shit. Ohhhhhh SHIT!

9.50 with three missed calls from school reception.

“Max we have to go!!! We are seriously late!! Why didn’t my alarm go off???”

He smiled in an unconcerned manner and said “oh Katrina and the Waves? I turned it off. It was making my head hurt.”

Gemma looked at him incredulously.

“You.... turned it off? Knowing that we would be late for work? Knowing that this is a new job that I’m trying to make a good impression at?”

Max shrugged looking vaguely annoyed “why are you so worried with making a good impression sweets! They can’t fire you unless it’s gross misconduct! Chill!”

Gemma realised she simply didn’t have the energy, or time, to argue with him. She began throwing on her clothes in haste.

“Get a move on Max! We are leaving in five!”

Fifteen minutes later a grumbling Max finally got in the car and they proceeded to school. Gemma pulled into the visitors parking and took a deep breath. In her rear view mirror she spotted Dominic walking towards her car so she opened the door and stepped out.

“Gemma! Thank god you’re alright! I’ve been calling to see if you needed more time! I was a little worried you had decided you didn’t want to work for an ogre like me and you were writing your letter of resignation!”

Dominic greeted her with a hug.

“Are you feeling better today? A good sleep works wonders! Did a lie in help?”

Before she could answer Dominic’s eyes swivelled to a movement from the passenger side of her car.

In a flash Gemma realised what this would look like but she was utterly powerless to prevent what unfolded next.

Dominic took a sharp step back from her, his face fixing like granite.

“Alright boss!” Max lounged against her car like he owned it. His sunglasses covered his eyes but his voice was filled with sneering laughter.

He slouched past Gemma and, before she could move or speak, planted a kiss full on her lips and murmured, just loud enough for Dominic to hear “thanks for last night sweetheart. Sorry you didn’t get that ‘good sleep’” with a wink he sauntered off to reception.

Gemma opened her mouth to speak but Dominic has turned on his heels and called after Max

“Mr            My office at break time please. You too Miss Hathaway.” He didn’t look at her “I suggest you both get to class quickly. Reading finished ten minutes ago.”
